Welcome Back to School
2019 - 2020
Dear 4th Grader and Family,
I am very eager to begin my 27th year of teaching and am excited to have your child in my class. Let’s work together to make this a great learning experience.
I would like to highlight some of the points that will make our year more productive, focused and organized. Please discuss the following at home with your child:
Communication to your home will be in the form of a newsletter that will be sent home a few times each month. This will help all of us stay on track and be better prepared for the upcoming weeks. Students will receive a Study Guide usually every week that outlines our studies in Reading, Grammar, Spelling and Writing. Students that have Mrs. Kashen for Math and Mrs. Hatcher for Science and Social Studies will have to become familiar with their requirements.
Our Homeroom/classroom website is: palmergrade4.weebly.com
HOMEWORK MATRIX: Sylvan’s 4th grade uses an online homework matrix to post all assignments, projects, tests, announcements etc. Students and parents can view this at any time by following this link: Need to add link here yet
The homework matrix is an easy way to see what is due, even if your child does not have his/her homework in the folder pocket. This document will be updated daily.
Homework is of utmost importance. Please allow 30-45 minutes per evening and weekends. All assignments must be turned in on time unless an excuse note is sent. It is difficult on the child and the class when homework is missing because we are setting examples for one another.
FOLDERS: One section of your child’s Yellow folder will be for HOMEWORK and the other side will be for graded work. In it, he or she should put ALL papers that need to be taken home, completed, checked by a parent, and returned the next day. This would include parent-signed papers as well.
Students will also have a GREEN folder. The sections of this folder will be used for the different subject areas. This folder should remain at school; however, if it should ever go home, PLEASE DO NOT take papers out of these sections. We will clean unneeded papers out at school at the end of a chapter or unit.
BACKPACKS: Your child should bring home the following items in his/her backpack each night:
♦FOLDER
♦ALL BOOKS and SUPPLIES necessary to complete the assignments
Your child may take home any book required for homework or study purposes. Please ask to see the homework section of the folder each night. This section should contain completed assignments and those to be completed for homework, along with any immediate correspondence that cannot wait until Friday.
BIRTHDAY TREATS / FOOD ALLERGIES
Treats are welcomed if your child wishes to bring one to share. A days notice is very helpful to me so that we can be sure to make time for the celebration. Please, please send in either individually wrapped treats or “pre-cut” treats. It is very time consuming not to mention a safety concern as I am unable to keep cutting utensils in the classroom.
Please let me know if there are any special food allergies that need specific attention and if this can be made known within a newsletter to the class in regards to parties and special occasions. Parents have been so considerate in the past in regards to food allergies. A suggestion that I have is to send in the labels for your treats as sometimes food is processed on equipment with nuts, eggs, etc. This way we can be sure about the specific treat.
For children with severe food allergies and parent/teacher peace of mind, I recommend sending in a box of wrapped treats of some sort that I may keep on hand for your child with their name on it it. I am happy to distribute this whenever an occasion arises.
SNACK BREAK: Students may bring a healthy snack to school each day. Snack is usually eaten around 9:30 - 10:00 a.m. We eat lunch at 12:00
We ask that students refrain from sharing their snacks with friends and eat only what they personally brought.
Students may bring a water bottle to drink during the day, but it must be water only.
Expectations:
♦respect yourself
♦show respect for Sylvan Staff (adults) and other students
♦respect school property and the property of other students
♦behave in a responsible manner at all times
♦complete all work neatly and on time
POSITIVE Reinforcement:
◆praise from teacher
◆Bobcat "PAWS" note
◆positive notes and phone calls home
◆extra recess when time allows
◆free time or special privileges
NEGATIVE Consequences:
◆1st offense: verbal warning given
◆2nd offense: highlighted name
◆3rd offense: check mark next to name
◆4th offense: call home and detention next day
◆lose extra recess or special privileges
I look forward to an outstanding school year. Please do not hesitate to contact with me with any questions throughout the year.
